When  features recur in predictables patterns, they help the readers to find information

In "academic text" ...

  2. Abstract(if there is one)
  3. Parts that 'jump out'(main heading and subheadings, chapter summaries, highlighted text)
  4. Illustrations, graphs, tables or diagrams(and their captions) - they usually summarise the content of large portions of text
