Identify reference words

The parts that make up a text are related in a meaningful way to each other, and recognizing these relationships will help you to undestand it better.
In order to understand a text, it is necessary to understand how the setences are related. Words like "it","this","that","here","there", etc. refer to other parts of the text.

What is identifying reference words ?

  •  It is to understand how pronouns help join setences in a text.
  •  Certain items of language in English have the property of reference. That is, they do not have meaning themselves, but they refer to something else for their meaning.


How to identify reference word?

  • Always notice pronouns such as: I, You, He, Her, This, Those, etc.
  • Look back in the setence to find what they refer to. Think: whats is the previous subject? Does this word refer to the previous subject?
  • If necessary look in previous sentences.
  • Don't look too far back


Example:
Gary will have a football match this saturday. He was on the team. He got breakfeast in the morning. It was very delicious.
Gary saw a lot of people. They were coming to see the football match. He saw his girlfriend,Caroline.She shouted "Good Luck".

Other exemple:
Man: I've never been to Scandinavia, so I've decided I'm gonna spend the summer there.
Woman: That'll be expensive, won't it?
Man: Hmm. Not really. My grandfather is from a small Swedish town near the Norwegian border. His sister still lives there. in Sweden.
Woman: Will you stay with her?
Man: For some of the time. The expensive part will be my stay in Denmark. I don't know anyone  there
